Amazon Announces the Kindle - a Wireless Reading Device

Amazon announced the release of the Kindle 2 (UPDATED 2/10/09). The Kindle is Amazon's "wireless reading device." Amazon has a demonstration video and videos of authors discussing the Kindle. The price is $359 and many of the e-books are selling for $9.99.

Will the Kindle 2catch on? I guess we'll have to wait and see. Feel free to share your comments about the Kindle. My guess is the Kindle will become popular.

If the Kindle would read out loud it would be a great aid to those that are blind. My sister is constantly sending books off to be recorded and it can take months before it is sent back to her. She also receives recordings from the Sight Center here in Cleveland but they just send her whatever is available and she sends them right back. Most of the time she cannot a book if it is new, she once again must wait months or even years for it. The Kindle would be an amazing tool for people with limited or no sight. Sharon H.

Is your sister signed up for the free Talking Books program through the Library of Congress? If she is, and is not getting books she likes, I encourage her to contact her local Talking Book library and speak to a Reader's Advisor. A Reader's Advisor can help select books that she will enjoy. If she is not already signed up for the free talking books program, I encourage her to check into it. You can get more information on it at http://www.loc.gov/nls/

There is also a digital download pilot project currently being offered for patrons. You can find out more information on this at https://www.nlstalkingbooks.org/dtb/. The books are downloaded to a device (Victor Reader Stream) and then are read out loud. You never have to return the downloaded. I definitely encourage her to check into this if she hasn't already!
