Does the new Amazon Kindle work where you live?

The Travelin' Librarian blog has a post showing a map of where the new Amazon Kindle works. I must admit that I did not realize its wireless coverage would not be in all places! You can see the map on the Travelin' Librarian blog at http://www.travelinlibrarian.info/2007/12/kindle-coverage.html. To find out if the Kindle works in your area, you can go to http://www.showmycoverage.com/mycoverage.jsp?id=A921ZON.

One thing I thought was interesting - I noticed that it does not work in most of North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska, as well as several states in the west. However, one thing that DID surprise me is that it shows it will work in much of western Kansas, which is a fairly isolated/non-populated area. I wonder what's going on, that it works there, but other areas that are much more populated, such as certain spots in the eastern U.S., don't have coverage. Any ideas?

The Kindle network does not work where I am - I am in a dead zone! Oh well, I can't afford one at the current price anyway. Perhaps the coverage area will increase in the future.

Hello All,
No reception in LaCygne Ks. We are a forgotten lot, I am legally blind and have found few services are avalable in Southeastern Kansas such as full access to NFB-NEWSLINE.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but you only need the wireless function to download books, it doesn't have to stay continuously on, correct? Because if not, you couldn't use it on a plane, or while traveling in many places. That would be a deal killer for sure, especially considering the price tag.

Yes, Terri, I believe you're correct. The problem comes in for those who do not live in an area where you can download books.

But for those who live in a place where you are able to download, you should be able to use the books/downloaded materials anyplace, once you have downloaded them.

I would imagine that the reason that the Kindle network doesn't work everywhere is that the technology they use is the same as cell phones, so there are dead zones. An area like Kansas might receive well because it's flat. Mountainous areas don't receive as well.

Does the Kindle work while flying?

Talking Books Librarian said...

I believe you can use the Kindle while flying - you just cannot download to the Kindle while flying, as far as I know. If this is wrong, someone please correct me. Thanks!

Hi...I, too, can't get coverage where I live in Vermont. Though if I drive six miles down the road I can.
However, I can download books off the internet into kindle very easily....Not bad considering the bookstores around here are limited and close at 6 on Saturday night!
