Free Public Transit for People with Disabilities

The AARP Bulletin features an article titled, "New law makes public transit free for some disabled people." (As a side note, I would recommend "people first" language be used in the article title.....)

The article talks about a new law, Senate Bill 1920, in Illinois. Based on household income, people may qualify for free (or reduced) fares on public transit. Read more about it at http://tinyurl.com/6nwopw

For what it's worth, the Port Authority of Allegheny County (Pittsburgh, PA), already offers a half-fare for disabled persons, and a free fare for seniors, presenting either an ID card issued by the state or a Medicare card. See http://www.portauthority.org/PAAC/FaresPasses/Fares/SpecialFares/tabid/110/Default.aspx for details.

Also (from the same page),
'A special fare incentive program on Port Authority bus, light rail, and incline services is available for individuals with disabilities who have been certified as "ADA paratransit eligible" through ACCESS, Port Authority's paratransit system. A special identification card is issued by ACCESS to those who are eligible for this program.'
