Asus EEE PC 1000HE 10 inch netbook blue (I finally decided!)

Asus EEE PC 1000HE 10 inch netbook blue (I finally decided!)

ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook (1.66 GHz Intel Atom N280 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB Eee Storage, Bluetooth, XP Home, 9.5 Hour Battery Life) Blue

Okay, many of you have been following my saga of which netbook to buy. I want to thank everyone who provided feedback on the advantages and disadvantages of the netbooks I was looking at. Basically, I had narrowed it down to the Acer Aspire One AOD150-1165 10.1-Inch Netbook or the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook.

Well, the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook has just started shipping from Amazon, and that is the one I decided to go with. I like the fact that it has a 10 inch screen, plus it has the new N280 processor (making it faster than other netbooks) and bluetooth! They have also improved the keyboard over previous models. And I love the blue color. (I know, you shouldn't judge a netbook by its color, ha ha! But it is also available in black, and maybe even white?)

You can see more about it here (if the picture doesn't work, click the text link):

I'll let you all know once I've received it. I hope to do a review after I've used it for awhile, so those who want to know more about it can see all the juicy details!

Article: Kindle? Here comes the Talking Book!

Article: Kindle? Here comes the Talking Book! (or maybe it should be Kindle 2? Here comes the Talking Book!)

Have you read the article at CNET titled Kindle? Here comes the Talking Book!

You can read it at http://news.cnet.com/8301-13641_3-10164366-44.html

Taken from the article:

"Everyone's talking about the new Kindle, but here's a product that may present an even more radical innovation in the e-book sector: The Talking Book, created and distributed by the non-profit Literacy Bridge, is a low cost audio player/recorder with special features for Knowledge Sharing and Literacy Learning. It was developed entirely by volunteers and costs less than $10."

Acer Aspire One AOD150-1165 10.1-Inch Netbook is now available / released to buy (update on which netbook should I buy)? Any reviews available?

A few days ago I posted my dilemma about which netbook to buy. And I'm STILL asking myself, which netbook should I buy? LOL. Thank you to those who provided feedback! At the time of my last blog post, the Acer Aspire One AOD150-1165 10.1-Inch Netbook was not yet released. (It was available through pre-order only.) Well, I just discovered today that the Acer Aspire One AOD150-1165 are now being sent out from Amazon! This certainly puts an interesting twist on my dilemma, now that this one is officially available and released. It was probably my top choice, followed by the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook which has still not been released yet by Amazon. I am wondering if anyone is aware of any reviews on these particular models? Since they are so new, I haven't had much luck finding reviews of either. The one thing I like about the Asus is the newer N280 processor.

I also had some interesting feedback about the Dell Mini's. It seems almost everyone that has these, loves them. But the price seems significantly higher... unless anyone knows of any special deals going on? (hint, hint???) LOL.

So, my dilemma lives on.... and I suppose if I wait long enough, even better ones will come out! Thanks again to everyone for their feedback. Please keep it coming! I'll let you know when I finally decide!

Kindle 2 text to speech: is it a copyright violation or help for those with disabilities?

Kindle 2 text to speech: is it a copyright violation or help for those with disabilities?

Have you heard that the text to speech feature on the Kindle 2 is creating quite a stir? Some people are concerned the text to speech ("Read-to-me Feature") on Kindle 2 is in violation of copyright.... while others are maintaining this is the best thing the Kindle has done for those with disabilities yet!

I've seen stories about this all over the internet recently.... in a nutshell, it seems some are concerned that because the Kindle 2 has text to speech, this may violate the copyright of the authors whose books are being "read" in text to speech. But what about those with disabilities, who can benefit from the text to speech features the Kindle 2 offers?

To read more about the text to speech feature on the Kindle 2, go here and scroll down to "Read-to-me Feature."

Wow, does anyone have any comments about this? I am in disbelief!

Amazon Kindle 2 for blind and visually impaired: Text to Speech has arrived and is here to stay

Amazon Kindle 2 for blind and visually impaired: Text to Speech has arrived and is here to stay

I mentioned recently in another blog post: Amazon Kindle 2 for blind and visually impaired: Will Amazon Kindle 2 work for blind and visually impaired that Amazon has a text to speech feature on Kindle 2 that will be great for those who are blind or have vision impairments. Someone mentioned a concern that because the feature is experimental on Kindle 2, it could be removed at any time. However, according to Amazon, this is not the case. Amazon states that they NO PLANS to remove any experimental features on the Kindle 2. See link below for more details:

Experimental Features Will Not Be Removed on Kindle 2

Click on the "Why are Some Features Experimental link" from that page. That page states, "We have no plans to remove the experimental features—in fact, we are working hard to make them even better for you."

I felt this information was important enough to pass along to all readers, especially those who are blind or have vision impairments. I also think that it is important that anyone who is blind or has vision impairments that is using the Kindle 2 provide TONS of feedback to Amazon about this feature, including ways to improve it!!!

Kindle 2 coupon code / Amazon Kindle 2.0 coupon code: Discounts for Kindle

Kindle 2 coupon code / Amazon Kindle 2.0 coupon code: Discounts for Kindle

Is there a coupon code for Kindle? Are there any discounts for Kindle?

Some people are wondering if Amazon is going to release a coupon code for the Amazon Kindle 2 / next generation Amazon Kindle, or offer any discounts. Well, it does not look like a coupon code is going to be released any time soon and no discounts are currently available. So, my recommendation if you want to purchase a Kindle is to just do it, lol. The price is only $299, which is less than what the original Kindle started at! I would LOVE to have one myself!

It could be months (or even longer) before a coupon code or any further discounts appear for the Kindle. But you can bet that if any coupon codes or discounts do appear, I will post about it here on Talking Books Librarian blog.

1.5 million books in your pocket: Google delivers books to your cell phone!

Have you read the recent article on the Inside Google Book Search blog called 1.5 million books in your pocket? It seems Google is now delivering books from Google book search to iphone or Andriod phones.....

Taken from the website at http://booksearch.blogspot.com/2009/02/15-million-books-in-your-pocket.html:

"What if you could also access literature's greatest works, such as Emma and The Jungle Book, right from your phone? Or, some of the more obscure gems such as Mark Twain's hilarious travelogue, Roughing It? Today we are excited to announce the launch of a mobile version of Google Book Search, opening up over 1.5 million mobile public domain books in the US (and over half a million outside the US) for you to browse while buying your postage.

While these books were already available on Google Book Search, these new mobile editions are optimized to be read on a small screen. To try it out and start reading, open up your web browser in your iphone or Android phone and go to http://books.google.com/m."

Am curious if anyone has any comments or opinions on this???? hmmm...... anyone???

Have you heard about PaperBackSwap? It's a cool site where you can give your used books or textbooks to others and then get free books for yourself! And if you're a book lover like me, nothing beats free books!

Here is a brief summary of how it works:

Post any used books or used textbooks you are want to get rid of at PaperBackSwap. If you list 10 books, you get 2 free "credits." You can use these credits to get 2 free books right away! And you get to keep the books you receive! (Or of course you can also put them up to "swap" again after you've read them.)

Read prescriptions out loud (audio reader for your prescriptions) - great for those who can no longer read prescription labels

Read prescriptions out loud (audio reader for your prescriptions) - great for those who can no longer read prescription labels....

Check out American Foundation for the Blind's article titled Access to Prescription Information with ScripTalk at http://www.afb.org/afbpress/pub.asp?DocID=aw100106

Taken from the article:

"Within a few minutes of unpacking ScripTalk, the device was reading prescription information in a clear, easy-to-understand female voice. Sliding the On/Off/Volume control activated the unit with three short beeps and a longer beep. The synthesized voice announced "ScripTalk Station ready," and a final tone sounded. Placing the medication container within the circle of nibs directly above the speaker and pressing the Read key caused the unit immediately to beep three times and for the voice to announce "Patient, David Raystrick."

Following the patient's name, all the information associated with the sample prescription was read in sequence by ScripTalk. The voice was well modulated and provided information at a pleasant pace. Note that the rate of speech can be changed."
